Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s newly revealed pig Pokémon Lechonk has one of the best English names the series has seen in years. During the second official trailer for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, released on June 2, a few new characters and Pokémon were revealed. One of these Pokémon is Lechonk, whose appearance and name have rightfully put it on the forefront of many fans’ minds.
Lechonk is categorized as a Hog Pokémon, and is pure Normal-type. Its strong sense of smell used to sniff out only the finest Berries to appease its gourmet appetite resembles the real-life practice of training pigs for the purpose of finding truffles. These “truffle hogs” also enjoy eating the truffles, which are some of the most expensive food products around the world, just like how Pokémon enjoy eating Berries and other foods.

This Scarlet and Violet Pokémon’s English name most notably includes the meme-tastic word, “chonk.” Chonk is originally, and very uncommonly, a verb that means “to chew energetically” according to Merriam-Webster. On the internet, however, it grew to be a word for describing rotund animals, popularized by Twitter user @dreamlandtea’s iconic “Chonk Chart” posted on August 10, 2018. Since then, chonk and its conjugations have been widely used as endearing descriptions for large animals. But there’s more to Lechonk’s name than just the “chonk,” and the rest of its name is actually more traditional in nature.
