PlayStation consoles are losing Twitter integration next week
Sony Interactive Entertainment has confirmed that X (formerly known as Twitter) integration will be disabled on PlayStation consoles next week.
“This includes the ability to view any content published on X on PS5/PS4, and the ability to post and view content, trophies, and other gameplay-related activities on X directly from PS5/PS4 (or link an X account to do so),” the company said.
Sony’s support site also details alternative ways for players to share game captures from PS5 and PS4, including via the PlayStation App for the newer console.
While Sony has yet to confirm why it’s disabling X functionality, Microsoft did likewise on Xbox consoles in April, following the introduction of what many believe to be exorbitant charges to access the social media platform’s API.
Sony is releasing a new PS5 model this month. Like the launch model, the new one will be available in standard and Digital editions. According to the company, the new console has been reduced in volume by more than 30%, and in weight by 18% and 24% respectively compared to the current one.
Unlike the launch model, the new PS5 Digital Edition will support an attachable Blu-ray disc drive, which can be purchased separately.
The new PS5 is expected to will debut on November 8, with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Modern Warfare 3 bundles on the way.
