We’ve seen reports for a good while that a new model for the PlayStation 5 was in the works. Insider Gaming was one of the earliest reports suggesting that this new model was coming, and today, we have the official reveal. Rather than saving this reveal for an event, Sony uploaded a new video highlighting the new models alongside a post on their official PlayStation Blog. Players can expect a revamp to the PlayStation 5 starting this holiday season, but it doesn’t appear to have made any changes to the internal components.
While the internals remain the same, these new console models will be slimmer. That’s the big component Sony is pushing with the new replacements for the current PlayStation 5 models available in the marketplace. According to the blog post, the models will be reduced by 30% in volume and weight by 18% or 24% less compared to their currently available models. This new revamp to the consoles will also see four separate cover panels, with the top portion of the PlayStation 5 consoles featuring a glossy look while the bottom half retains the matte finish.
Furthermore, a significant component that we’ve seen reported on in the past is that the new PlayStation 5 digital edition would come with the ability to attach a disc drive. That proves to be true with this new revision. It looks like a separate Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive can be purchased for $79.99 at a later date. From there, you can attach it to the PlayStation 5 to make it appear exactly like the standard model counterpart.
According to the PlayStation Blog post, it’s stated that starting this November, you will see the new models roll out. Once inventory of the current PlayStation 5 models is sold out, you will see the new PlayStation 5 consoles
