On Twitter, @charlieINTEL posted images of what is alleged to be an upcoming PS5 Slim bundle. The bundle features Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 along with the new PS5 Slim.
Wait…..are you actually trying to say to me that the PlayStation 5 Optional Disc Drive has ONLINE DRM??!!

This would have been interesting enough on its own, but things got more intriguing when Twitter user @The_Stebe zoomed in on some fine print. At the bottom of the bundle’s box is a message that reads: “Internet connection required to pair Disc Drive and PS5 console upon setup.”
On the surface, this doesn’t seem like much of a problem. It says nothing about a constant connection being required, and it wouldn’t be the first PlayStation to need to be connected to the internet, as owners of the current digital version of the PS5 have to download their games from the PS Store.
There are some fringe cases where it may be an issue. Most notably, it leaves you dependent on Sony’s servers to set up your console. Hence, in a scenario where Sony’s servers shut down, it would potentially be impossible to pair up a new disc drive with a console.
Sony hasn’t commented on the matter. The PS5 Slim launches in November, and you’ll be able to pick from the standard version and the digital edition which you can add a standalone disc drive to.
