Fans have gotten id Software's classic shooter Doom playable within Atlus' hit JRPG, Persona 5 Royal. The iconic first-person shooter game is one of id Software's most beloved titles, having been ported to several different video game systems over the past three decades. The effort hasn't stopped at official ports to consoles, as Doom is also quite famous for having been ported to non-gaming devices, including but not limited to a Google Smart Clock, an Amiga 2600, and many others. Some fans have now managed to get the game running within Persona 5 Royal.
Persona 5 Royal is an updated re-release of one of Atlus' most successful JRPG releases. Much like the original Persona 5, players have the chance to engage in a variety of activities. This includes playing video games in the attic of their home base, Leblanc, after purchasing a retro game set from a secondhand shop. While these retro games are rendered as mini-games that give the player a social stat boost, some modders have gotten the feature to allow gamers to play Doom.
The mod was created by Xan1242 and KingJack, with the first video showcase by JRPG YouTuber Faz. In this demonstration video, Joker can buy Doom in-game for 670 yen. Morgana actually has some unique flavor text upon purchasing the game, where he acknowledges how Doom was one of the most influential FPS games in the '90s. The player can then boot the game up in the hideout, which is shown as a red cartridge that is placed in Joker's console, much like how Doom had a red SNES cart when it was ported to the system.
This port is based on the shareware version of the game, meaning the mod only covers the first level of Doom, «Knee-Deep in the Dead.» Both the in-game tutorial and Morgana acknowledge this is the shareware version, and that if players manage to beat it, they can purchase the full version of the game through the in-game secondhand shop (though the Doom.wad file must be in the mod's Doomsona folder).
