The HBO TV series Peacemaker shows that the prospective changes to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 can have a positive impact on the franchise.Both projects have James Gunn at the helm, who directed the previous Guardians of the Galaxy movies and Peacemaker's predecessor The Suicide Squad. While the Guardians of the Galaxy series is generally humorous, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is expected to have a darker tone and, according to Gunn, will be the last film in the series. However, just because the film's tone will be darker doesn't mean that it won't have Gunn's characteristic funny charm, and Peacemaker proves this.
Peacemaker follows Christopher "Peacemaker" Smith (John Cena) on a black ops mission called "Project Butterfly" orchestrated by Viola Davis' Amanda Waller. Helmed by Chuckwudi Iwuji's Clemson Murn, a Butterfly gone rogue, Project Butterfly is tasked with tracking down a moth-like parasitic alien species and killing their host. The characters confront harrowing decisions and traumatic pasts, but its witty dialogue and '80s hair metal soundtrack effectively keeps the tone from being too grim without taking away the weight of the show's darker elements.

It's hard to say how dark Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be, but moments like Yondu's (Michael Rooker) funeral in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and the characters' involvement in both Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame prove that the Guardians movies have the capability to be more serious.
