The devs over at Mainframe Industries are peeling back the curtain a bit on their plans for the RPG and combat systems in their upcoming MMORPG Pax Dei.
In a new blog shared in the official Discord, the team lays out their vision. They've kept silent on purpose in order to wait until everything was ready for them to share a fuller story of their outline.
The team wants to have a classic MMO foundation, with the basic elements of classic MMORPG combat systems. So, expect the basics like the holy trinity of roles, with tank, healer, and DPS, health points, endurance, and some degree of aggro management. However, since Pax Dei is a sandbox, you'll have full control over your own role without a traditional class system.
Every item in the game is crafted, so this means that gear is going to determine what role you can play. There are trade-offs, however, to avoid having everyone just max out every potential option, so some gear may have skill prerequisites or may scale to your corresponding skill level. You might not be fully trained in Magic of Light, but you'll be able to use a related sword. However, you might only be half as good with it as your friend.
PVE rewards will essentially be resources that you can use to craft higher level items. For a top gear set, it will mean taking some risks. Item decay is also happening, and higher quality items have more better durability levels, but it is possible to create powerful weapons that are very fragile.
You will also lose some equipment when you die. Whether you are adventuring to get some resources to craft the best gear set you can or engaging in PvP, you will lose some stuff when you die. In PvP, your enemy will be able to loot your corpse.
