2021's Ghostbusters: Afterlife left the door wide open for more ghosts to sneak in, as well as a sequel. While Sony Pictures didn't offer up any footage, they did share what look to be a new plot development for the upcoming film.
In lieu of footage of the film, stars Carrie Coon and Paul Rudd appeared in a video with director Jason Reitman and writer Gil Kenan alongside young Ghostbusters Finn Wolfhard and Mckenna Grace; the whole family, including Rudd and Coon, are suited up in the iconic khakis. The video describes them as a family, which suggests that Coon and Rudd's characters got hitched between the two movies after their spooky meet-cute in the first one.
Reitman and Co. were already talking about a sequel before Ghostbusters: Afterlife hit theaters. Keenan said that «there are lots of surprising ways that the future and past can grow together, side-by-side and separately» at the time of Afterlife's release.
The Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel is currently without an official name. Stars Mckenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, Paul Rudd, and Carrie Coon will all reprise their roles, and actors Patton Oswalt (Young Adult) and Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick) will reportedly appear in the film as well. Kenan will direct the screenplay, which he co-wrote with Reitman. Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2 is currently set to hit theaters on December 20, 2023.
