Nintendo and the Paper Mario fanbase have not had the healthiest relationship for some time now. Most fans consider the series to have peaked with the Gamecube title Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, and since then, Nintendo seems to have largely tried to get away from what that game represents, toning down both the series’ tongue-in-cheek writing and its RPG elements. While rumors would occasionally pop up, the idea that we might ever return to a Thousand-Year-Door-style Paper Mario seemed like a lost cause.
Well… surprise! Today during the most recent Nintendo Direct, an HD remake of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door was announced. Based on the game’s first trailer, it looks like it’s going to be a faithful recreation of the original with all the wackiness and turn-based battles intact. Whether anything significant is being added to the package is unclear at this moment (a reduction in the required backtracking would be nice). Check out the first trailer for the new Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, below.
Good to see you again, old friend! Between Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door remake and the Super Mario RPG remake, it’s a good time to be a fan of turn-based Mario fun. One wonders why the company finally, er, folded and decided to give us real Mario RPGs again, but I'm not going to question it. Hopefully, these games are a success and we can get some all-new Mario RPGs in the future. Dare to dream.
