Director Ruben Fleischer is excited by the success of Venom: Let There Be Carnage and the Spider-Man crossover potential. Fleischer directed 2018’s Venom, which introduced Tom Hardy’s journalist Eddie Brock, alien symbiotes, and the former’s connection with the iconic Spidey antagonist, Venom. Despite bad reviews by critics, the original Venom was a hit with general audiences thanks to Eddie and Venom’s dysfunctional, yet symbiotic relationship.
Fleisher didn’t return to the helm last year’s follow-up, Let There Be Carnage. Instead, Andy Serkis stepped in to direct the sequel as it further leaned into Eddie and Venom’s odd-couple dynamic. While the duo is in the midst of a falling out, they’re forced to come together and face off against Woody Harrelson as serial killer Cletus Kassidy, who became the host for another symbiote, Carnage. All of that aside, perhaps the film’s most talked-about moment was its post-credits scene, which saw Eddie/Venom make their Marvel Cinematic Universe debut. A little over two months after the release of Let There Be Carnage, Spider-Man: No Way Home introduced a handful of Sony characters from previous movies to the MCU, including Venom.
