Octopath Traveler 2 has only been out a few months, but that hasn’t stopped people from wondering when a third installment may arrive. A recent interview with some of the folks responsible for this year’s sequel may have hinted at when players can expect the series to become a trilogy. However, the answer may disappoint fans of the RPG.
A few of the devs behind Octopath Traveler 2, including director Keisuke Miyauchi, producer Masashi Takahashi, and artist Naoki Ikushima, sat down with the Japanese magazine Famitsu to discuss the evolution of the series and its future. In the chat, translated by the folks over at Nintendo Everything, the trio was asked what a third installment could look like, with the second having evolved so much from the first.

In response, Miyauchi noted that they “haven’t decided clearly on future developments yet”, while Nishiki chimed in with a joking, “I’m out of ideas”. Clearly, the devs are still basking in the glow of releasing Octopath Traveler 2 and not quite focusing on another entry. That likely means that a third Octopath Traveler will not be making its way to screens anytime soon.
While Miyauchi and Nishiki shared that they weren’t focusing on a new game now, Takahashi gave insight into how Octopath Traveler 2 was tackled by the developer. The biggest obstacle was whether to evolve on continuing the series, or shake it up completely. The team chose to evolve on what already worked for the last game, even if they were itching to try something new.
