Despite calling blasters “uncivilized” in previous Star Wars movies, Obi-Wan seems to be using one in the new Obi-Wan Kenobi trailer. Set to premiere on May 25, 2022, Obi-Wan Kenobi will follow the Jedi Master’s journey while in exile on Tatooine. The Disney+ miniseries will take place 10 years after the end of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, pitting Obi-Wan against the Inquisitors as they try to hunt down any Jedi who survived Order 66. With the recent release of Obi-Wan Kenobi’s first teaser trailer, audiences got their first look at actors returning from the Star Wars prequel trilogy, such as Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan) and Joel Edgerton (Owen Lars).
The last time McGregor played Obi-Wan was during Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, which included a scene that contradicts Obi-Wan’s actions in the Obi-Wan Kenobi trailer. Near the end of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, Obi-Wan finally fought General Grievous of the Separatist Army. During their battle, Obi-Wan did not have his lightsaber with him. Due to this, he had to use a blaster to shoot Grievous. However, as soon as Grievous was dead, Obi-Wan tossed the blaster aside, calling it “so uncivilized.” In Star Wars: A New Hope, Obi-Wan expressed a similar idea when he gave Luke Skywalker his father’s lightsaber, explaining that the lightsaber was “not as clumsy or random as a blaster; an elegant weapon for a more civilized age.” Both of these instances show Obi-Wan’s disdain for using blasters rather than lightsabers.
