With the home video release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, details surrounding an infamous trailer error from last year have been revealed. There's no denying that Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios pride themselves on holding secrets tight to the vest, making for some epic surprises for the MCU fan base. The hype and secrecy surrounding Spider-Man: No Way Home hit gargantuan heights as, for months and months leading up to its release, there were all kinds of details being leaked that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield would indeed reprise their respective web-slinging roles in the film. However, despite some convincing theories, all actors and filmmakers continually denied their involvement.
All of this hype came to a head in the fall of last year, just months before No Way Home's December theatrical release, when Marvel began releasing promotional trailers. The trailers confirmed the appearance of Alfred Molina's Doctor Octopus from 2004's Spider-Man 2, and hinted at the re-emergence of Willem Dafoe's Norman Osborne from the original 2002 Spider-Man. With these two cameos confirmed, fans devoured the new footage for any and all semblances of a Maguire/Garfield crossover. While there was no concrete evidence, all it took was one small flub in a Brazilian-dubbed version of the trailer to expose Marvel's poker face.
