The official Twitter account for Playstation recently worked people up into a tizzy. The company tweeted about how "the watchword for PlayStation is 1, 2, 3.” This led many fans to believe that backwards compatibility for PS1, PS2, and PS3 might just be coming to PS5. But this turned out to be a tempest in a teapot.
While there have been all kinds of rumors around backwards compatibility in the last couple of months, the tweet wasn’t actually teasing anything about PS1, PS2, or PS3. PlayStation was quite simply announcing that a television advertisement would be going live on January 23. In other words, the release would be on “1, 2, 3.”

The company said that “Kenshi Yonezu decided to appear in the latest advertisement for PlayStation.” This of course represents the key to understanding the cryptic tweet. Yonezu is a popular musician with five hit albums to his name. He has made many appearances on television over the years and recently began venturing into video games. Yonezu for example was found at Party Royale in Fortnite where he performed several songs from his album Stray Sheep which came out a few days before the event on August 5, 2020. The advertisement in question features a song by the musician called Play Has No Limits that has “1, 2, 3” in the lyrics.
PlayStation mentioned that something was “launching on January 23,” but rather than backwards compatibility, this turned out to be the advertisement featuring the song by Yonezu. While fans of the musician have been happy to hear Play Has No Limits, people hoping to pick up some PS1, PS2, or PS3 games have been disappointed.
