Earlier this week, Nintendo finally put an end to one of the games industry's worst-kept secrets and officially announced the Switch 2, stating that it will be shown off at some point during this fiscal year, but that it won't be revealed at the company's yearly Direct this June.
Even though we know it's coming soon, it's still up in the air as to when the system will actually launch, but Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa seems to have suggested that we shouldn't expect it to launch before April 2025. Speaking with investors (translated by GamesIndustry.biz) shortly after making yesterday's announcement, Furukawa explained that Nintendo expects to sell roughly 13.5 million consoles this fiscal year.
That's a hefty number of consoles considering that the Switch is now officially in its final year, but Furukawa went on to explain that this number does not include sales of the Nintendo Switch 2, suggesting that the system won't launch before the start of April 2025. It would be very strange for Nintendo to omit the sales of the Switch 2 from its yearly forecast, so it seems likely we're in for a longer wait than we initially expected.
In fact, it seems as though Nintendo itself isn't quite sure of when it's going to actually launch the Switch 2 either, as Furukawa has also told investors that the company "[hasn't] yet discussed launch timing" just yet. Of course, the company probably knows it will launch at some point in 2025, though it sounds like the specifics haven't quite been hashed out at the moment.
That means it's also pretty likely we won't get an actual reveal until 2025 too, if the console is coming out in the second part of the year as Furkawa's comments suggest. Thankfully, we'll have a couple of Direct's before then at the very least, so the system's launch lineup should start shaping up pretty nicely, with Pokemon Legends: Z-A already confirmed for 2025.
