Today, Nintendo announced that the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will no longer be released in 2022.
The announcement was made via YouTube, with Eiji Aonuma, producer of the Legend of Zelda series, taking center stage to explain why Breath of the Wild 2 will now see a Spring 2023 release on Switch.
The delay won't come as too much of a surprise considering all the disruption caused by the pandemic over the past couple of years. Breath of the Wild 2 is also adding new gameplay elements and will take place "in the skies above" as well as on the ground. It looks to be a much more complex game than the original, so fans will forgive a few extra months to get that right.
Another factor that certainly helps Nintendo when it comes to deciding to delay such an important game is the other new Switch games it has available to cover the schedule gap created. Although we don't have a confirmed release date yet, Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet are scheduled for a late 2022 release. Before that we have the new Switch Sports game in April, Mario Strikers: Battle League Fooball in June, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 in September, and Splatoon 3 planned for some point in the summer. Mario Kart 8 players also have a lot of new tracks to keep them occupied in the months ahead.
I'll just throw this out there... perhaps the delay is just to polish the gameplay, but what if it's because Nintendo has finally decided to release a Switch Pro early next year and wants a new game to sell alongside it that can take advantage of the extra performance on offer? What better game than Breath of the Wild 2 to do just that?
