The fan-favorite character Nightwing is known for his black and blue uniform — mimicking the bird that acts as his namesake — but an Alex Ross redesign of his outfit may be the best costume that hasn't actually made it into the DC Universe. A recent post by Ross on his Twitter shares a redesign for Dick Grayson that builds on his most notable outfit with a healthy dose of the Dark Knight added in. Ross' alterations may have made a costume that fits former the Boy Wonder better than his iconic ensemble, or perhaps the outfit Dick would wear if he'd never broken away from the Dark Knight to find his own identity.
While fans may love Dick Grayson, most agree that his early costumes haven't aged well. As Robin, he was the first to wear the garish red and green costume, later adopting his infamous disco-inspired outfit when first breaking out as Nightwing. The hero eventually settled on his modest black uniform with blue highlights, and aside from a few variations, Dick has mostly worn the same thing for most of his adult hero career.

In a recent tweet, Alex Ross shared concept art of a potential Nightwing redesign, posting a few pencil sketches of Dick Grayson with a new take on his costume. Grayson's new duds notably include a cape, with one sketch showing what Nightwing would look like flying through the air. Dick's costume also includes a hood/mask combo to protect his identity and an inverted bird symbol on his chest. The costume takes obvious inspiration from Dick's mentor Batman, but with a beak-like hood and unique cape design that keep his avian motif front and center.
