Spoiler warning for Fantastic Four Reckoning War: Alpha #1
The role of the Silver Surfer within the scope of the Marvel universe may be a little more complex than readers previously assumed, all thanks to a new promotion for Nick Fury. For the past few years, Fury has been forced to silently observe the universe as it unfolds before his eyes as the Unseen, all because he killed a Watcher, Uatu, during the Original Sin storyline. As punishment, he was appointed as the Unseen by the Council of Watchers, watching over the Earth remotely from the moon with the eyes of Uatu implanted in him.
Things take an interesting development in Dan Slott, Paco Medina, and Marcio Menyz'sFantastic Four #25 when Uatu returns from the dead. Following a vision of an incoming "reckoning," he decides he needs a new right hand man to prepare for whatever's coming and thus, the Watcher appoints Nick Fury as his new Herald. Traditionally, a Herald has been a title bestowed upon servants of Galactus, like the Silver Surfer. As it turns out, the role of a Herald is something that all cosmic beings call their servants.

Technically speaking, Silver Surfer and Nick Fury are now officially on the same level, as both have been appointed Heralds by their respective cosmic superiors. As Marvel chooses to expand the lore of the role of a Herald within the universe, it begs one to wonder which wavelength each man sits on in terms of power levels. Upon a further examination, when trying to determine who is stronger between Nick Fury and the Silver Surfer, the answer will have to be the latter.
