There are a few basic tips that the player can follow in order to gather this precious resource more quickly, cutting down on the time required to improve their equipment. Here are some of the most important things to know about farming gems.
A player gets gems by mining Ore Veins. These are marked by the Resource Locations Icon on the map. Once at the marked location, look for a dark rock nearby and approach it. If it's an Ore Vein, a pop-up will appear showing the name of the resource. Equip the Pickaxe and long-press «E» to mine the vein.
All ore--whether it's Iron, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Starmetal, or Orichalcum--has a chance of dropping gems when mined. Having a better Pickaxe increases the chances of getting gems, as does equipping a Miner's Charm, so it's worthwhile to transfer quality equipment out of storage.
The single biggest factor that affects one's probability of gem drops is the player's skill level. The second is Mining Luck, a bonus that the player can fortunately increase in several ways.
