Netflix's Cowboy Bebop stays relatively faithful to the anime for the most part. However, it also makes several crucial changes to the story, the most notable of which being Ed's absence for the majority of the first season, as well as some questionable casting decisions and Julia betraying Spike after taking over the Red Dragon Syndicate. These changes did not bode well for many, hence the largely negative reviews. Despite the potential in a second season, the poor ratings ultimately led to the series being canceled altogether.

Cowboy Bebop's cancellation is bad not only because Netflix's gamble didn't work, but because, now, confidence in Netflix's Avatar live-action remake series seems threatened to run the same risk. The series has already come under fire for a variety of issues noticed by audiences in a way that's reminiscent of early audience skepticism towards Cowboy Bebop. With pre-release skepticism towards Cowboy Bebop being essentially confirmed by the series' cancelation, Avatar is entering the Netflix streaming platform even more so on the defensive.
