Netflix Phishing scam warning! Victims' debit cards, credit cards, OTP compromised

A new Netflix phishing scam has come into light that attempts to steal users' personal and credit card information. As reported by CNA, at least five victims fell for this scam in a month losing around S$12,500. Singapore police have warned citizens of phishing scams involving spoof emails from trusted sources like video streaming company Netflix. And shockingly, it is able to bypass mail security measures that are touted as being capable of blocking such scams.

Police said, “The scammers would trick recipients into clicking on a URL link to renew their subscriptions.” Once the victims click on the links, they're redirected to phishing websites and ask them to enter their credit or debit card details and one-time passwords (OTPs) in order to renew their subscription. As soon as the details are entered, scammers steal the details and perform unauthorized transactions on victims' cards.

The police have the public to not click on any such emails claiming to be from trusted sources such as Netflix. And in case of suspicious website URL, they must check if the email domain matches the merchant requesting for payment.

Users can also follow these safety measures to protect themselves from these scammers.

Never click on URL links provided in suspicious emails and text messages.

Always verify the authenticity of the information with the official website or trusted sources.

Never disclose your personal or Internet banking details and OTP to anyone or any link before verifying it.

In case of any fraudulent credit/debit card charges, immediately contact your bank and get your credit or debit card blocked immediately to save your money.
