The unrelenting tidal wave of layoffs across the industry claims another victim. It's come to light that Visual Concepts Austin, a division of Take-Two's studio responsible for the NBA 2K series as well as LEGO 2K Drive, has had some staff let go.
The news comes via Game Developer, which spotted a LinkedIn post from former art manager Brad Bowling. In it, Bowling states that he and «a group of very talented developers» have been laid off from the team. «I have had a great time over the past couple of years working with some of the finest Game Devs in the industry,» he says. «Over the past 23 years of making game art, I have seen some downturns but nothing like this.»
Software engineer Sydney F. is another that was let go from the studio, also posting about it on LinkedIn. She describes the situation as «definitely rough», noting «it’s only been a year and a half since I was previously laid off as well».
As mentioned, reports of layoffs throughout the industry are cropping up everywhere, and it unfortunately is showing no signs of slowing down. We wish all those affected all the best.
Having grown up alongside PlayStation, Stephen has developed an eclectic taste in video games and a wide knowledge of the medium, from small indie gems to the biggest AAA blockbusters. Ever hopeful that the Burnout series makes a miraculous return.
Video games have never been more popular or more profitable… and yet every few weeks it seems there are job cuts. Something is seriously amiss here.
It seems to me that we have a very skewed image of the health of this industry. Outside of GTA5, Fortnite, COD etc. bloating the stats there is clearly an issue.
@LifeGirl The investors want more and more and they will never to that same high as with COVID when everyone was at home with nowhere to go.
