Warner Bros. Games and NetherRealm Studios today revealed the first gameplay trailer for Mortal Kombat 1, including the reveal of a returning fan-favorite character.
Mortal Kombat 1 is shaping up to be a bloody and brutal continuation/reboot to the Mortal Kombat franchise. Today’s trailer drop not only provided a first look at gameplay, but also a look at the game’s story and Kameo fighting system.
Mortal Kombat 1 takes place after the events of Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath. Fire God Liu Kang successfully reset the timeline where familiar characters tackle their stories in a brand new way. The trailer provided our first look at Johnny Cage, who was previously confirmed as a playable character but not seen in the debut trailer, and the return of a popular 3D-era fighter, Kenshi. Previously announced characters like Raiden, Kung Lao, Kitana, Sub-Zero, and Scorpion also made appearances.
As for Kameo fighters, the trailer confirmed that these set of characters are assists that can be summoned during a fight to aide in combat. According to creator Ed Boon, these characters aren’t tied to the timeline are homages to the franchise’s 30 year history. Some characters, like Sub-Zero and Scorpion, are both main roster fighters as well as Kameo fighters. NetherRealm revealed a handful of Kameo fighters today, including Sonya Blade, Kano, Goro, Kung Lao, Stryker, and Jax.
Despite being announced just a few weeks ago, Mortal Kombat 1’s release date is quickly approaching. As such, Ed Boon promised plenty of announcements and trailers in the coming months. Expect to learn more about the game’s roster of playable and Kameo fights as we barrel towards the game’s September release.
