Unlike many other games in the monster taming genre, Monster Sanctuary's monsters are just as useful at the beginning of the game as they are at the end of the game, largely due to how each monster has its own niche use in battle that doesn't focus solely on damage dealing.

That being said, there are some monsters that are more useful than others, either due to their buffing or debuffing capabilities or their innate stats being better for their role than other monsters. Some also have use outside of battle and their overworld effects are good at every point in the game.

There are a plethora of different monsters to tame during your adventures but there are some that are better than others when first exploring the early parts of the game world.
Specter is a spirit occult mage, one that glows an ethereal purple color and has the visage of a skeleton floating through the air. Specter is located in the Blue Caves area of the game, an area that you will happen upon during the opening hours of the game. Specter's Ignite ability allows it to burn through vines, activate torches, and fire orbs while exploring.
While Specter is good for dealing some occult damage and spirit damage to monsters, it's a good one to have in your party mostly down to its strong debuffs, specifically Aura. Aura allows the enemy monsters to take more damage and deal less damage during battles.
