More than two decades have passed since the release of, and a third mainline entry in the series was planned, but those plans fell apart in favor of online and mobile games. Square trademarked the name in 2001, and three series developers, Hironobu Sakaguchi, Masato Kato, and Takashi Tokita, were slated to work on the project. It seems a combination of different priorities, internal company politics, and bad timing, prevented the third game from ever going forward, though some concepts would later be incorporated into mobile RPGs by the former developers.
The 2022 release of brought the series back into the limelight, but outside of similar re-releases there have been no new titles announced since the project. Some developers worked on the 2002 MMORPG instead of going forward with and other staff left Square to form Monolith Soft, the studio that made the and games. Fans and members of the gaming press continued to request updates on the third game through the 2000s, but after more than a decade passed, Sakaguchi admitted the project was dead.

At a 2014 PAX panel documented by Polygon, Sakaguchi was quoted as saying, “.” It took 25 years for the prequel story, to see an official English release, paired with the re-release. In the guidebook, Kato noted he wanted to produce a more “” sequel to to resolve some of that game’s plot threads. Tokita similarly referred to the project as .
Though and share a setting with, the comments from the developers suggest would have been more in line with the original. The trademark has expired, and the developers evidently concluded the sequel was simply not to be, as they repurposed some of its concepts for other games.
