An online Minecraft tournament, based on the Netflix series Squid Game, has led to a cyber attack against the small European microstate of Andorra. Releasing on Netflix in September 2021, the beloved South Korean drama sees a group of players fight to survive deadly children's games in order to win a massive cash prize. A Minecraft recreation of Squid Game, held as a Twitch Rivals tournament, helped simulate the series' deadly games with participants from all around the world.
Squid Game stars Lee Jung-jae as Seong Gi-hun, a gambling addict who struggles to provide for his daughter. Invited to participate in the game, Gi-hun encounters many allies and enemies as he fights to survive the grotesque challenges and walk away as a rich man. Squid Game gives deadly twists to popular children's games like Red Light, Green Light and marbles, and this bizarre combination of elements has motivated many gamers to recreate the competition. Minecraft's wide variety of resources makes it a natural platform to reenact the Netflix series, and a fan-made Squid Game minigame in Animal Crossing gives the Nintendo title's furry villagers a chance to compete as well.
