The Netflix series, created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, sees participants compete in a series of lethal children's games in order to win a large sum of money. The tools and resources featured in Mojang's survival sandbox game have allowed for Squid Game tournaments in Minecraft, with gamers creatively reconstructing the Netflix series' iconic challenges.
Thanks to its relatable characters and horrifically fascinating premise, Squid Game instantly dominated popular culture when it premiered in September 2021. The nine-episode series stars Lee Jung-jae as Seong Gi-hun, a gambling addict who struggles to provide for his young daughter. Gi-hun is given the chance to win a massive cash prize by competing in a tournament, forcing him to survive fatal versions of schoolyard games like Red Light, Green Light and marbles. The original premise and effective execution made Squid Game a huge hit for Netflix, and gamers quickly imagined ways to recreate the experience with less deadly consequences.
