After an excruciatingly long season, The Witch Queen is finally here. Before you grab your Osteo Striga SMG and jump into Savathun’s Throne World, you need to take three minutes and watch Bungie’s interactive Witch Queen trailer. Not only is it the best way to catch up or refresh yourself before starting the new expansion, it’s also a phenomenal storytelling tool that I hope Destiny - and other live service games - continue to use in the future.
Destiny 2 has a storytelling problem. Expansion campaigns and seasonal storylines have traditionally told short, disconnected stories, leaving the lore pages and supplemental reading material to contextualize each event and provide world-building. We’ve seen better serialized storylines throughout Beyond Light, but the advent of the content vault simultaneously removed years of important story content that was essential to understanding Destiny 2’s big picture. On top of all of that, the seasonal storylines also get erased each year, ensuring that none but the most dedicated Destiny players will ever have any idea what’s going on in the story.

None of this background is essential, of course. The Witch Queen is the villain and we’re going to another planet to defeat her. If that’s all you know about the story, you can still enjoy the expansion. But Destiny’s story is one of its greatest strengths, and The Witch Queen is a major moment.
