In the newest episode of long-running of NBC show Law & Order: SVU, Lieutenant Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) charges rape as a hate crime. Created by television heavyweight, Dick Wolf, Law & Order: SVU is the longest running live-action television series. As season 23 hits a midpoint, the SVU department continues to take on hard-hitting topics with fresh perspectives.
Law & Order: SVU has made itself a NBC staple, keeping audience members locked on the show for 23 seasons, steadily pulling in large numbers since 1999. The follows an elite group of detectives who try to seek justice for victims of abuse and sexual assault. In addition to the beloved characters that are a part of the show, the success of the show is also owed to the way that showrunner Dick Wolf is always able to keep topical issues, often drawing influences from modern headlines, at the forefront of every episode.

Law & Order: SVU's upcoming episode is no different. The promo for the next SVU episode, uploaded through TV Promos, features Lieutenant Benson charging a suspect of rape with a hate crime charge for the sexual assault of a victim.
