The trailer for The Man Who Fell to Earth provides a first look at Chiwetel Ejiofor's alien family. The upcoming Showtime series is inspired by both the 1963 Walter Tevis novel and Nicholas Roeg's 1976 film of the same name, which follow an extraterrestrial named Thomas Jerome Newton who arrives on Earth in search of a way to save his home planet, Anthea, which is suffering from severe drought. Other than Ejiofor, who is known for his role inDoctor Strange as Mordo, The Man Who Fell to Earth also stars Naomie Harris, Jimmi Simpson, Clarke Peters, Rob Delaney, Bill Nighy, and Star Trek's Kate Mulgrew.
The title, The Man Who Fell to Earth, should surely be recognizable to the general public, as the Showtime series developed by Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet is the third incarnation of Tevis' novel. The first was the 1976 arthouse film starring David Bowie, which made pennies at the box office but garnered a significant cult following in the years since, due to its surrealist imagery and the late musician's heartfelt performance. A decade later, a failed pilot starring Lewis Smith, Beverly D'Angelo, and Wil Wheaton was turned into a television movie.
