The name of Minecraft’s latest update, 1.20, has officially been revealed as Trails and Tales. Announced during the debut episode of Minecraft Monthly, a new monthly news broadcast for the game, the update will bring with it a range of new features, including rideable camels, when it launches “later this year.”
First announced during Minecraft Live 2022 as the 1.20 update, the newly-christened Trails and Tales has been long-awaited by Minecraft fans. Thankfully, given the large suite of new features it’s set to introduce, it’s unlikely to disappoint. We’ve mentioned the camels, but the update will also include a new cherry blossom biome, bamboo wood, archeology options, a new mob in the sniffer, the ability to play mob sounds through note blocks, and visual customization options for armor and bookshelves.
Beyond the mechanical additions to the game, Trails and Tales is also a step forward for the overarching philosophy of Minecraft. According to the official announcement, the name “represents the journey that Minecraft takes us on,” while the new features are intended to help players express themselves and tell their own stories within Minecraft’s blocky world.
Agnes Larsson, Minecraft’s game director, made this clear in the official announcement for Trails and Tales, noting that the “1.20 update is all about self expression, specifically self expression through representation, story telling, and world building. And, it’s the journey – your trails – that ties it all together. The Minecraft worlds belong to the players – and so do the stories, or tales, about those worlds.”
