Microsoft Released a Windows 11 Update That's Causing PCs to BSOD
Microsoft is investigating reports that a Windows 11 update released this month is causing the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) to appear due to an "unsupported processor" error.
As The Verge reports, the culprit is update KB5029351, which was released on Aug. 22 and mainly focuses on improvements to the search functionality in Windows 11. However, a growing list of users are commenting on Reddit that the update caused their computers to BSOD.
The common component all these users seem to share is an MSI-branded motherboard. Microsoft confirms it's investigating the problem and is asking anyone affected to file a report using the Feedback Hub. Currently there is no fix available that allows you to keep the update installed, but Windows 11 will recover by rolling back the patch.
Anyone who has yet to install the KB5029351 update need not worry as Microsoft has pulled it for the time being. It's speculated that the problem may have something to do with a BIOS update MSI rolled out to allow its motherboards to support Intel's forthcoming 14th-generation processors, but we'll have to wait for Microsoft to confirm exactly what went wrong here.
Earlier this month, Microsoft removed 44 Intel processors from its Windows 11 support list, but there were all entry-level server chips. And if you've been using Windows 11 for a few years, you may remember Microsoft at one point replaced the Blue Screen of Death with a Black Screen of Death, although that no longer seems to be the case.
