2008’s Iron Man adapted the superhero origin of Tony Stark, but Obadiah Stane’s failed assassination plots throughout the film may be connected to Hydra, an even larger MCU threat. Iron Man initiated the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a simple, character-driven, and well-acted superhero origin movie, faithfully adapting the classic Marvel Comics character and his origin story’s modern reimagining in the Extremis storyline. As the MCU grew, it adapted more of Marvel comics lore, such as the terrorist group known as Hydra, whose whereabouts during the events of Iron Man and their aligning interests with antagonist Obadiah Stane create a believable possibility that the eventual Iron Monger sought to become an ally of theirs, plotting to assassinate Tony Stark for his and their benefit.
As revealed in 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Hydra endured their defeat at the end of World War II, with many of their members being recruited to SHIELD, in a parallel to the real-life Operation Paperclip, a highly unethical Cold War-era program. Unsurprisingly, the Hydra scientists grew in number, restoring their organization in secret within the ranks of SHIELD and exerting their fascist influence on the world using SHIELD’s resources. The Winter Soldier’s revelation of Hydra’s existence within SHIELD led to reevaluations of seemingly unrelated MCU events, including the deaths of Tony Stark’s parents. It was later revealed that Bucky Barnes had carried out their assassination after being brainwashed into serving Hydra as the Winter Soldier.
