Captain America (Chris Evans) dying in Avengers: Endgame instead of Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) would have made the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 4 worse. After taking an extended break following the Infinity Saga, Marvel Studios' next era is now in full swing. Despite that, fans can't help but always revisit Avengers: Endgame, especially since it wrapped up MCU's first decade of storytelling.
It would be an understatement to say that Avengers: Endgame was a packed film. Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo with the script written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, the film resolved the cliffhanger ending of Avengers: Infinity War. On top of that, it also functioned as the swan song for some of the MCU's founding heroes. That included the Avengers' co-leaders, Tony Stark and Steve Rogers. However, while they're both out of the franchise now, their respective final fates couldn't have been more different. Iron Man died after sacrificing himself to defeat the Mad Titan, while Captain America got to retire in the 1940s with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell).

Recently, however, co-director Joe Russo was asked why Iron Man was chosen to die in Avengers: Endgame instead of Captain America. The filmmaker said that boiled down to wanting the most emotional impact when wrapping up the Infinity Saga. Tony dying for the greater good is a poetic ending to his arc, while Steve deserves to finally get to live his personal life. But aside from that, it also sets up the future of the franchise. If it was the other way around, Marvel Studios would have a more difficult time establishing MCU Phase 4.
