A Marvel Studios prop master explains why Captain America's shield design changed at the end of Avengers: Endgame. Ever since assuming the role of the Star-Spangled Avenger, the shield had been Steve Rogers' (Chris Evans) weapon of choice. That's until he gave it up at the end of Endgame, opting to pass it on to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) instead. But eagle-eyed fans quickly noticed that the shield Sam now uses is different from what his predecessor wielded.
As beloved as Avengers: Endgame was, there have been several questions that it failed to answer. A lot of them revolved around Captain Rogers' ending, including his decision to hand off the shield to Sam. It's worth noting that during Steve's one-on-one fight with Thanos (Josh Brolin) during the movie's climactic battle, the villain repeatedly hacked away at it with his sword, resulting in the iconic shield getting fragmented. It was never shown to be fixed, so there's understandably some confusion as to where he got the different-looking shield that he gave to his successor.

Speaking with Phase Zero, Marvel Studios prop master Russell Bobbitt explains what brought on the change. Apparently, it boils down to his interpretation of what was happening at that point in Avengers: Endgame. Read his full comment below:
«My attitude was and the way I saw it, and the way I interpreted it was, 'I’m handing off the torch. I’m passing the torch. I’ve made some improvements. I want you to run with this. It’s your shield, it’s not mine.' Now, that’s one guy’s interpretation. Hopefully, a lot of other people saw it the same way. But that’s kind of in a nutshell where [Marvel] went with it.”
