Jake Gyllenhaal calls his time working on Spider-Man: Far From Home «cathartic.» Far From Home takes place after the events of Avengers: Endgame and effectively ended Phase 3 of the MCU. Gyllenhaal was introduced in the sequel as Quentin Beck, aka Mysterio, who was previously insulted by Tony Stark. Beck claimed to be from an alternate reality, Earth-833, and traveled the multiverse to hunt down Elementals. Beck and Peter Parker got along at first until Spider-Man discovered that Beck was faking the attacks on Earth- 616.
Much like Spider-Man: Homecoming, Far From Home was well-received, which is partly due to the villain Mysterio. Gyllenhaal's character also set up one of the biggest cliffhangers in the MCU by revealing Spider-Man's identity to the world. Spider-Man: No Way Home picks up directly after its predecessor, and Beck's actions are still impacting future MCU projects, with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness showing the titular hero trying to fix the multiverse after helping the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Gyllenhaal's character played a big part in shaping MCU's Phase 4, and it looks like his time in the franchise also left a lasting impression on the actor.

The actor explained that before Spider-Man: Far From Home, he took himself too seriously, so getting to loosen up a bit with an MCU movie ended up being a very "cathartic" experience for him.
