Jake Gyllenhaal reveals he was in awe of Robert Downey Jr. while making Zodiac and would relish in watching he and his co-stars work. Based on multiple non-fiction books, the 2007 mystery thriller chronicled the hunt for the titular serial killer as he terrorized the San Francisco Bay area during the late '60s and early '70s. The film primarily focuses on the staff of the San Francisco Chronicle, namely political cartoonish Robert Graysmith and crime reporter Paul Avery as they work to decode the encrypted letters being sent by the Zodiac to the newspaper with coded messages detailing his actions and his plans.
Alongside Gyllenhaal and Downey Jr., the ensemble cast for Zodiac included Mark Ruffalo, Anthony Edwards, Brian Cox, Elias Koteas, Donal Logue, John Carroll Lynch, Chloë Sevigny, Philip Baker Hall and Dermot Mulroney. Helmed by David Fincher on a script from future Scream co-writer James Vanderbilt, the film scored rave reviews from critics and audiences alike for its writing, direction, performances and attention to detail and historical accuracy. Despite the rave reviews, Zodiac was only a modest box office success, grossing just shy of $85 million against its reported $65 million production budget.
