Mamma Mia! is one of the most popular musicals to have made the jump to the big screen with not one but two movies, and with talks about Mamma Mia 3 floating around in recent years, here’s what the main actors of the potential trilogy have said about returning. Back in 2008, the stage musical Mamma Mia! made the jump to the big screen with Phyllida Lloyd as director and a screenplay by Catherine Johnson, based on her book from the 1999 musical. What makes Mamma Mia! stand out from other musicals is that it’s based on the songs of ABBA, with additional music by ABBA member Benny Anderson, and this has been key to its success on stage and on the big screen.
Mamma Mia! follows Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), a young bride-to-be who decides to invite three men to her upcoming wedding: Sam (Pierce Brosnan), Harry (Colin Firth), and Bill (Stellan Skarsgård), each one with the possibility of being her father. Their arrival is a major shake-up for Sophie’s mother, Donna (Meryl Streep), who thought she would never see these men again, and now they are all together, staying at her villa, and preparing to attend her daughter’s wedding. Mamma Mia! was a big box office hit, but critical reception was mixed, with a lot of criticism about the plot and the casting of inexperienced singers. However, all this criticism didn’t stop Mamma Mia! from getting a sequel, and so Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again was released ten years later.
