As millions of players began their Diablo IV journeys during the Early Access and Open Beta Weekends, the journey to Kyovashad was briefly halted with a simple, yet lore-driven quest: inscribing your sin on a tablet to symbolically burn and purify yourself. This Right of Passage quest may seem like a simple thing on the surface, but these types of quests pack incredible amounts of world building lore into neat, tiny packages.
Blizzard Senior Quest Designer Harrison Pink dove into a Twitter thread to explain how a moment like this small quest is created, and revealed the love and care Blizzard have for their games: It's clear that the ramifications of such a simple pause for breath in the story were clearly discussed, planned, and intended: this wasn't merely a throwaway quest to force players into a chokepoint, or a silly one-off intended to make someone laugh. Everything from the timing of the quest, to the conversation between two guards, to Lorath's reaction was carefully crafted to leave the player with incredible amounts of information in as little time as possible.
This wasn't entirely fluff however — there were technical reasons too, and what better way to capitalize on a mechanical need than this? It's amazing how such a small moment can have so much impact on a player — and how deeply Blizzard considers these moments before making them. The only thing left for everyone is to inscribe their own sins once Diablo IV launches in June — and we have guides on the Fractured Peaks and getting to Kyovashad quickly to help players do just that!
