Yes, fine, I know. A Sonic fan begging to return to the Adventure formula isn’t anything new, and we’re all sick of it by now. But this time, it has nothing to do with the gameplay. No, we need to return to Sonic Adventure because it has the best vibe, and that’s all Sonic should be about.
We laugh at these games, and quite rightly so. The dialogue is ridiculous - when it’s even audible thanks to the terrible sound mixing. It’s trying so hard to be cool that it loops back around into being lame. There’s a rap that literally opens with the lyrics “it’s your main man Knuckles”. But this was the pinnacle of Sonic’s identity, and the last time he felt comfortable being in his own quills. Sonic Adventure doesn’t care if you laugh at it, and that’s the route the series needs to take if it wants to shake off its bad reputation.

And yes, we hate bringing up the bad reputation too. But like, it’s true. Sonic has pretty much received a soft reboot with every new game since Shadow the Hedgehog in 2005, and Frontiers will be another. Let’s just take the L.
That’s not to say the games have been bad since then. Sonic Colors and Generations were very well received, and Sonic Mania was a long-awaited return to form. But there’s pretty much been no consistency in terms of tone. The Sonic Storybook series was scrapped after one game (at least one game after the branding was used). Sonic Chronicles was a chronicle made up of one DS title. Sonic Boom - an actual self-confessed reboot - was dead on arrival.
