New Madame Web set photos reveal Sony’s upcoming film will take place in New York City during the early 2000s. Peter Parker/Spider-Man has enjoyed huge success in the MCU thanks to Sony Pictures and Disney/Marvel Studios’ 2015 deal, with last year’s Spider-Man: No Way Home becoming Sony’s highest-grossing movie of all time. As the MCU continues to expand its multiverse, Sony has attempted to develop its Spider-Man Universe with Venom, Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Morbius, which have yet to feature Tom Holland’s web-slinger. Sony has also green-lit several other spinoffs based on Spider-Man characters, including Kraven the Hunter, El Muerto, and Madame Web.
In February, it was announced that Dakota Johnson had been cast as the lead (Cassandra Webb or Julia Carpenter) in Sony’s first movie focusing on a female superhero, Madame Web. The film is being directed by S.J. Clarkson with a screenplay by Kerem Sanga, Matt Sazama, and Burk Sharpless. In addition to Johnson, Madame Web's cast includes Sydney Sweeney, Tahar Rahim, Emma Roberts, Celeste O'Connor, Isabela Merced, and Mike Epps in unknown roles. Aside from being an origin story, plot details are being kept under wraps, though filming began earlier this month. Now, new photos from Madame Web’s set reveal details about the film’s timeline.

The Boston Globe’s Kevin Slane recently shared the first images from Madame Web’s set on Twitter. From the context of the images, the film appears to be set in the early 2000s.
