The latest update for Halo Infinite on PC launched earlier this month, but it's rendering the game unplayable for some because their graphics card doesn't have enough VRAM.
As DSO Gaming reports(Opens in a new window), before the Season 3: Echoes Within(Opens in a new window) update it was possible to play Halo Infinite on some graphics cards that were above the minimum spec in terms of raw performance, but had less than 4GB of VRAM. After the patch, if your card doesn't have at least 4GB of VRAM, you can't play anymore. Not sure what graphics card you have? It's easy to check.
The minimum spec for the game as listed on Steam(Opens in a new window) requires either an AMD RX 570 or Nvidia GTX GeForce 1050 Ti graphics card. Both cards include 4GB of VRAM as standard. However, there are higher-spec cards such as the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060, which only have 3GB of VRAM but offer more performance(Opens in a new window) than a 1050 Ti. Even so, after the update that 1060 card can't run the game anymore, but the 1050 Ti will.
When Halo Infinite launched back in 2021, it offered a new Master Chief campaign alongside a free multiplayer experience. The latest patch includes a range of new content, including new multiplayer game modes and maps, but it also introduces support for ray tracing. The patch notes(Opens in a new window) make no mention of the hard 4GB VRAM requirement, though.
Anyone hit by the VRAM limitation is likely to be frustrated, but it's also an opportunity/excuse to upgrade your graphics card and in the process be able to take advantage of the new ray tracing support.
