Winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar would likely have been an indescribable feeling for football icon Lionel Messi and his teammates when Argentina beat France in a nail-biting finish. However, as memorable as it is to win a World Cup, it is also important to note that the victory was a team effort, so Messi recognizing this, decided to treat every one of his Argentinian team members to an iPhone 14 Pro and not just any model, but one with a 24-carat gold plating.
What is special about the gesture is that, according to The Sun, Lionel Messi actually met with entrepreneur Ben Lyons to make this possible. Lyons is the CEO of iDesign Gold and states that Messi got in touch with him just a few months after winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup in order to make custom gold iPhone 14 Pro models for each of his teammates.
The thoughtful part of this gesture is that each of the 35 models has the player’s name and the Argentinian logo engraved on it, suggesting that quite a bit of work went into churning out these custom models. When asked why Messi chose gold iPhone 14 Pro models, the football legend said that he wanted to give his players a special gift to remember the time they won the World Cup.
However, he did not want to go through the usual process of gifting them pricey watches, so this is where he landed. Messi spent around $200,000 on all of those 35 iPhones, but that should not have dented the finances of the 35-year-old as he was reportedly the world’s highest-paid athlete in 2022, having earned $130 million, according to various sources.
Argentina has now won three World Cup finals, with the nation’s last victory taking place in 1986. While you salivate the thought of a shiny, new 24-carat gold iPhone 14 Pro, do check out
