Fans could be getting a new LEGO Super Mario announcement during the annual Mario Day celebration later this month. Every year on March 10, Nintendo holds special events and discounts in honor of the iconic Super Mario Bros. franchise, and this year’s festivities could include release dates for previously announced Switch titles like Paper Mario: The Thousand Year-Door and Luigi's Mansion 2 HD.
Meanwhile, LEGO and Nintendo have had a successful partnership ever since the first LEGO Super Mario sets were released in the summer of 2020. This initial wave of playsets featured an interactive board game in which players guided an electronic Mario figure through courses inspired by classic Super Mario levels. Over the past couple of years, LEGO introduced Super Mario expansion sets centered around popular characters like Luigi, Princess Peach, and Donkey Kong, with the latest kit being based on Bowser and his dreaded muscle car from Super Mario 3D World.
Even more exciting LEGO Super Mario news could be coming on March 9, the day before this year’s Mario Day event. This was hinted at in a brief trailer on the official LEGO YouTube account, in which a host is interrupted by someone before he can even finish his introduction. The screen cuts to black as the host asks “How did they get in?,” implying that this new LEGO Super Mario announcement could be centered around a villainous group of characters like Wario and his equally unscrupulous sidekick Waluigi.
LEGO Super Mario is only the first piece in the growing partnership between Nintendo and LEGO, as sets based on various other Nintendo properties have either been released or rumored in the wake of the Mario line’s success. Last fall, LEGO announced a collection of Animal Crossing sets, which eventually launched earlier this month.
