Those who have played The Last Of Us continue to be left in awe when it comes to the level of detail in its HBO adaptation. However, something from episode six (spoilers ahead for both the episode and The Last Of Us Part 2) hints that the minute details in the show extend beyond staying faithful to the games, possibly linking Ellie's inability to whistle to Inuit folklore.
Ellie and Joel have a lot of hours to fill as they cross the country. Months, in fact, and during one of the brief windows we're shown how they fill all that time, Ellie asks Joel how to whistle. Unable to explain how, Joel whistles but Ellie does not. Connect that with the appearance of the northern lights in the episode, and fans may have stumbled upon a very cool easter egg.

Wambammelam shared a shot of the northern lights on Reddit, explaining that in Inuit folklore it is considered bad luck to whistle at them. Also called the aurora borealis since people believed the northern lights were the manifestation of Aurora, the Roman goddess of dawn. It was also believed whistling at them would summon Aurora to carry you up to heaven.
Hence why Inuit folklore dictates whistling at the northern lights is bad luck. Now, fast forward to the end of the episode where Joel is stabbed, seemingly on the brink of death as he falls from his horse and Ellie is left helpless, not knowing what to do. Here come those spoilers as those of us who have played the game know that unless the adaptation includes a huge twist, this is not how Joel dies.
However, and here come the Part 2 spoilers, Joel does die eventually, and perhaps his whistling at the northern lights is an indicator that yes, his on-screen
