Morbius star Jared Leto explains why he returned to comic book movies after playing Joker. DC Comics villain Dr. Michael Morbius is finally set to join Sony’s Spider-Man Universe after nearly two years of COVID-related delays. In addition to Leto, Morbius stars Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal, Tyrese Gibson and Michael Keaton.
Sony’s play to build its own comic book cinematic universe around Spider-Man villains like Morbius of course began with the release of Venom back in 2018. Given what a smash hit Venom was, it’s no surprise that Sony is following a similar formula with Morbius: an origin story starring an acclaimed actor in an anti-heroic take on a previously-neglected fan-favorite character. But unlike Tom Hardy when he took on the role of Eddie Brock in Venom, Leto actually has prior experience in the comic book realm. The actor of course played Joker in 2015’s Suicide Squad, later returning to portray the Batman villain in the memorable Knightmare epilogue of Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
