Morbius director Daniel Espinosa breaks his silence on the deleted mural scene, which referenced Tobey Maguire’s version of Spider-Man. In the latest Marvel comic-book adaptation produced by Sony Pictures, Jared Leto stars as the biochemist with a rare blood disease, who turned himself into the Living Vampire. Following the initial release of the $75 million budget film, Morbius has continued to meet a low reception from its critics and audience.
Along with the appearance of Michael Keaton’s Vulture in the initial Morbius trailer, many fans were surprised to see the reference to Maguire’s Spider-Man suit instead of Tom Holland’s version. In the teaser trailer, Leto's character was seen meandering around in an orange prison jumpsuit, with the background showcasing the wall-crawler in a mural with the word “murderer” defaced across it with graffiti. However, this only led to more confusion when the titular costume was revealed to be a flipped image of a DLC of Raimi’s suit from the Spider-Man PS4 game in 2018.

In an interview with CinemaBlend, Espinosa narrowly explains the removed Easter egg reference to Maguire’s Spider-Man costume in the film. To his own surprise, Espinosa shares that he had no intention of adding the mural in the trailer, as he was not involved in the creative processes of the trailer. Therefore, Espinosa claims he had no say in the decision to include the image in the trailer and can only make assumptions, as he is allegedly still unaware of the “murderer” tag reference.
