Morbius’ box office was able to beat its bad reviews, and this is how that happened. The latest installment of Sony's Spider-Man Universe was widely considered to be dead on arrival given its critical reception, but despite the bad press surrounding the movie, Morbius still took first place at the box office in its opening weekend. There are a variety of reasons for how Morbius was able to pull that off, but the real question is how it will be able to perform going forward.
Morbius was looked at with skepticism even before it was released. From the very start, there was an idea of superfluousness surrounding the Marvel Comics adaptation on account of it being a standalone movie about a relatively unknown Spider-Man antagonist that wouldn’t even feature Spider-Man. And after the negative reception of his version of the Joker in Suicide Squad, the casting of Jared Leto as the titular Morbius wasn’t seen as a vote of confidence for the movie’s quality. Sure enough, after its release, Morbius was met with a largely negative reception from fans and critics alike who criticized, among other things, its story, characters, visual effects, and the confusing ways that it tries to connect to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Despite the negative reception, however, Morbius was still able to open at number one at the box office.
