James Gunn recently discussed his initial feelings about The Suicide Squad's HBO Max release, and how it ultimately impacted his subsequent Peacemaker series for the streaming service. Gunn's 2021 DCEU film introduced audiences to John Cena's complex anti-hero, who leads the 2022 series. Peacemaker takes place after the events of The Suicide Squad, which used its post-credits scene to set up the return of Cena's Christopher Smith, AKA Peacemaker.

The director recently opened up on how The Suicide Squad's release structure paved the way for Peacemaker's success.
