Guardiansof the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn brings an «indie spirit» to the set, according to actor Karen Gillan. A veteran in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Gillan has garnered acclaim for her performance as the blue-skinned cyborg Nebula, having starred in both GOTG films as well as the Avengers' Infinity Saga. Gillan is currently filming Guardians of the Galaxy 3, scheduled to release in May 2023.

Disney eventually re-hired Gunn in 2019 to return for another Guardians of the Galaxy movie. With Gunn back at the helm and all main cast members returning, GOTG 3 is expected to round out the Guardians trilogy as the final film in the series.
